I’ve been thinking about healing a lot lately, as a couple of my friends have been dealing with some major health problems, and I have some health issues, too.

The Bible clearly states, in at least two places, that we were healed by the beating Jesus took right before He was crucified.

So it’s a done deal!

Finished, as He said (John 19:30).

Why then are some of us still sick? And don’t give me that stuff about Paul’s thorn in the flesh – God treats each of us differently, because we are each unique. So what’s needed with one of His children isn’t necessarily what works with others. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ here.

This last weekend, Holy Spirit showed me something I had believed since childhood, that had kept me unhealed most of my life.

I started wearing glasses when I was 8. The first week or so, I had horrible headaches. My clearest memory from that time is of my Mom rocking me, with a cold compress on my eyes.

What He showed me was that I agreed to have bad vision because it meant that I could receive this kind of love and attention from my Mom. (After all, how many mothers are still rocking their children when they’re eight years old?)

So I have worn glasses ever since, and my vision has gotten progressively worse, as I was told it would.

And yet, Holy Spirit also showed me that good vision is my birthright in Christ!

So even though my eyesight was healed two thousand years ago, because I made an agreement with bad vision as a child, in an attempt to have my needs met, I still don’t walk in perfect eyesight!

How stupid is that! Furthermore, He began to show me how this basic belief had shaped my whole life – other health issues, my relationships with parents, children, husband, and even God!

No wonder I expected to ‘pay’ for God’s love somehow – to have to suffer, or go through hard times, or .. something!

This was not the belief that I had to earn my salvation, or His love. I know better than that! He loves freely, and gives freely. It was more a sense of having to ‘pay the piper’. That we get happiness by living through pain first.

UGH!!!! This is really masochism!

And it’s demon dung!

Straight from the lies of satan!

And I refuse to believe it any more!

As you go through the next few days, may Holy Spirit show you if there are any places where you have made an agreement with sickness or pain, in an attempt to get your needs met.

And may He show you that all your needs are met in Jesus Christ, so that you can stop striving to get them met on your own.

May He also set you free of every lie, every vow, and every belief that keeps you from walking in the total healing (body, soul and spirit) that Jesus paid a horrific price to give you!

Not only does Father God want us to know Him in as many of His facets as possible, but He also wants us to know Him in as many of our facets as possible. He wants your mind to know Him, your heart, your emotions, your body. That’s why He provided healing. That’s why we study the Bible. That’s why we spend time in worship. Each of those addresses a different facet, drawing it closer to God.

The church has long taught that the only part of you that needs, or is even able, to have a relationship with God is your spirit. But if that’s true, why do we have bodies or minds?  This is another of those teachings that is subtly used by our enemy to help us believe that parts of us are  unloveable or unneeded, can be neglected or even abused.

We were created as physical/mental/emotional/spiritual beings. He wants our spirits to know Him, yes, but don’t you think He wants to know and love each part of us?

Why do you think Jesus bore the beating that left His back in ribbons? Scripture says that was for our healing. (Isa. 53:5, I Peter 2:24) So obviously, He wants our bodies to know Him: to know His wholeness, peace and love.

He also wants our minds to know Him. That’s why He gave them to us. Why He wants us to use them. Start with studying scripture, but don’t stop there. Becoming His child does not mean you shut off your brain! The world is so full of amazing things, and every one of them can tell you more about our God, if you pay attention. So don’t be afraid of knowledge, even science. True science, studied without prejudice, will reveal God as creator over and over and over again.

And your emotions – also created by Him. After all, we were created in His image, and the Bible is full of God expressing His emotions. We can’t let them rule us, but when we learn to know Him with our emotions (worship is good for this) then they are healed as well, and we find out how to express them without them controlling us.

One of the reasons why we don’t ‘get saved’ and immediately go to heaven is probably this one – we need to learn to know Him in all these facets (of us and of Him). That takes time, and yes, we’ll have all eternity to know Him, but some things we apparently learn better when we have to work at them or fight for them. So Father God, in His infinite wisdom, created this whole universe so that we could learn to know Him. He allowed evil to take over, so that we might learn to recognize it, see and experience His goodness by contrast, and thereby learn to know and love Him better.

So as you continue your journey through this life, allow Him to reveal Himself to you in whatever ways and facets He desires. You’ll run out of time long before you run out of facets of yourself or of God.

May you be blessed with clarity and wisdom regarding which of your facets need to get to know your God. And may you be blessed with His unfailing love reaching out to you in every facet of Himself.

Sounds so spiritual, doesn’t it? In fact, it’s been so ‘spiritual’ for so long, that it didn’t seem very real to me. (Father’s love is very real to me, though.)

But lately, I’ve been contemplating the love that Jesus has for me, and I’m overwhelmed by it!

I have been seeing His love not just in the spiritual sense, but also the human one. After all, Jesus Christ was 100% man and 100% God.  Bringing it down to the human level makes it more real.

When I think of His very human reaction to what He was facing on the cross (and before it, too), it blows me away!

He loved me so much He was willing to suffer like that for the joy of having me as a friend, brother, part of His body and His bride!

* * *

And He loved You that much, too.

Can you feel the intense, even fierce, love He has for you?

He took a beating that often killed men, to give you healing!

He accepted shame when they stripped Him naked and hung Him on the cross for all to see. And He did it because He loves you too much to let you be imprisoned by shame.

He paid the penalty for every sin you will ever commit in your entire life, taking all the guilt and condemnation, so you can be free!

He fought satan himself for you!

This very human God, this God inside a man, loves you so much He even accepted being separated from His Father as He became your sin! Imagine being separated from the other parts of yourself like that – God has been three-in-one from before eternity existed – yet Jesus Christ was cut off from that relationship because He loved you so much!

When I contemplate this fierce lover, I am so in awe that I can only weep, and fall at His feet to offer Him my puny love in return.

May you be blessed with fresh revelation of the love of our Father, the love of our Savior, the love of our Bridegroom, and any facet you need a revelation of His love  in.

We love Him because He first loved us.  I John 4:19
